Financial Counselling


Jenny Macklin, Minister for Families, Housing, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs, has announced the recipients of new funding to provide additional Financial Counselling across Australia. Of the twenty new positions created by this funding, two will go to Family Mediation covering the areas of Dandenong and Broadmeadows. The Commonwealth Financial Counselling Program provides quality financial counselling services, free of charge, to people in low-income groups and to small business operators experiencing personal financial difficulties due to circumstances arising from their employment or lack of it, sickness, credit over-commitment and family breakdown.

The intended counselling outcomes are that a client’s financial problems are fully or partially resolved and they are able to make informed decisions on the best course of action to resolve their financial difficulties as well as to gain an improved ability to manage their financial affairs.

This program assists individuals and couples experiencing financial difficulty with issues such as:

  • Information and Advocacy;
  • Debt Management;
  • Small Business Insolvency;
  • Bankruptcy;
  • Property Settlement Option Generation;
  • Contract Disputes;
  • Credit Legislation;
  • Negotiations with Creditors;
  • Harassment from Creditors ;
  • Assistance with Appeals ;
  • Centrelink Issues;
  • Taxation Issues;
  • Housing and Tenancy;
  • Accessing Grants where Appropriate;
  • Budgeting;
  • Referral ;
  • Case Work;
  • Community Education;
  • Community Development;
  • Research; and
  • Policy Reform.
