Child Consultations

Family Dispute Resolution

After the first Joint Session of mediation, if both parents agree, your school-aged children can be brought to our centre to see one of our specialist child consultants. The consultant will spend time with your children as a group, and each child individually. At a later date the consultant will discuss with you their experience of meeting with your children, which often provides parents with new information about how their children are experiencing their life. Parents can use this new information to make good decisions for their children.

Why should my children attend a private consultation?

  • Children feel a sense of relief in having their voices heard;
  • It allows them to express how they are feeling;
  • They can talk to a professional, who is separate from their family;
  • It sends a message to children that mum and dad care about them at this difficult time.
  • Siblings can be seen together, with some individual time as well.

What kind of things can children talk about with a specially trained consultant?

  • How they are experiencing the separation/divorce;
  • How things could be for them;
  • What questions they might have for mum and dad; and
  • Whether they would like us to talk with their mum and dad about anything.
